Putting
a price on art
One artsite that is promising profits for this year is
Artprice.com, the French-based company that specialises in just one thing:
information about prices and artists, destined mainly for professionals.
Founded by Thierry Ehrmann in 1997 and launched on the Paris Nouveau Marché
last year, the firm (wich is 17% owned by LVMH chairman and owner of Phillips,
de Pury & Luxembourg, Bernard Arnault) is busy buying up databases
of art prices and artist biographies. It already has American and French
works. According to Mr Ehrmann, Artprice.com will soon acquire another
10 major art-history databases, including East German, Chinese and English
archives. The site also offers artist and art market indices. The company
reported sales of over $3 million (FFr 22 million; £2 million) in
2000, and maintains that it will be in the black within the first six
months of this year.
